Feature walls are an incredibly popular way to add dimension to a room. Choosing a feature wall lets you highlight specific features within the room and create something unique. Feature walls can be added to any room in the house, so we’ve put together a list of how this design method can be used wherever you want! Feature walls can add texture, colour, and atmosphere to a room. Don’t be afraid to try this in a new room- you might be surprised by how well it works! Living Room
A living room has so many elements and items that you might want to accentuate with a feature wall. This could be a fireplace, bookshelf, or even TV. The best way to decide the placement and style of your feature wall is to look at the shape of the room. Is there anything in the room you would like to improve? This might be adding more light to a dark area, or making a long room seem less narrow. A feature wall can change the perceived shape of a room, allowing you to draw the eye toward elements you like and away from things you don’t. Use your feature wall to complement the set-up of your furniture, creating a cosy space for you to unwind.
Bedroom
One of the most popular places to put a feature wall is in the bedroom. A block of colour or interesting patten can look fantastic against the headboard, and draw your eye to the bed. Using a soft material like grass cloth wallpaper can add to the existing soft furnishings and create the perfect atmosphere for a good night’s sleep. If you want a bolder look, consider using mouldings to frame the bed and nightstands. A feature wall doesn’t just have to be wallpaper in a painted room- don’t be afraid to try something new!
Kitchen
Kitchens already contain a variety of colours and materials- countertops, cabinets, tiles- so adding a feature wall might seem like you’re adding one element too many. The key to a good kitchen feature wall is to make sure it fits the overall theme of the room. Because the kitchen is such a busy space, try creating a feature wall that is useful as well as beautiful. You could use chalkboard paint to create a space where the family leaves each other messages and reminders. You could also use shelving to create a colourful wall that also provides extra storage. If you don’t want to use an entire wall, consider doing something bold with the splashback instead.
Bathroom
The bathroom isn’t traditionally a space where people flex their creative muscle. Because it’s small and going to get wet and steamy, it feels practical to throw up some neutral tiles and forget about it. This is a huge missed opportunity! We use the bathroom every single day, so why shouldn’t we create a nice atmosphere? A great way to add colour and pattern to a bathroom is with mosaic tiles. You can find tiles in every size and colour, so the only limit here is your imagination! Tiles are the go-to material for bathrooms, but they aren’t your only option. Paint, wood, and even mirrors can be used in feature walls to create something different that makes your bathroom a more inviting place.
Hallway
Hallways are often long and narrow, so putting a feature wall in here might seem like a strange idea at first. However, leaning in to the unique shape of your hallway can open lots of interesting and unusual design ideas. A feature wall can be as simple as creating a gallery wall with your favourite photos and prints, letting you show your personal side as people enter your home. Want to be more adventurous? Consider using paint or wallpaper on a single wall of your hallway, drawing the eye along the space as you walk.
